THE WARRENS

Cyrus Warren (1804-1888) of Hudson and Nashua was probably the most influential as well as the most productive of New Hampshire plane makers. Born in Hardwick, Mass. and trained as a carpenter in Windsor, VT Warren first came to NH in 1824, apparently to work on construction of the Nashua Manufacturing Company. IN 1829 he returned to Massachusetts where he learned the craft of plane making in Lowell. In 1836 or 1837 Warren erected his own plane shop in Hudson, NH the home of his wife's family. While min Hudson Warren apparently transmitted his skills not only to his younger brother William  (1818-1861) and to his son George Henry Warren (1829-1900) but also to Hudson native Dana Sargent (1818-1884) who later worked in both Nashua and Manchester. The prominent plane maker Addison Heald (1817-1895) of Milford also seems to have learned his trade from the Warrens.  In 1857 Cyrus Warren moved to Nashua, where he continued plane manufacturing until his health forced him to retire in 1875.Since Cyrus Warren's younger brother William died in his forties, and his son George transferred early in life to another trade, Cyrus Warren was the most prolific member of the important plane making family that he founded.
